About Dr. Doug
Dr. Doug Hirschhorn is a Trading Psychology Coach who is an author and frequent contributor to NBC, CNBC, CNN, MSNBC and BLOOMBERG. As a trading coach, he has conducted over 500 workshops at financial institutions, multi-‐billion dollar hedge funds and corporations across the world. By applying the techniques learned in pursuing a Ph.D. in sport psychology, Doug helps portfolio managers, traders and analysts achieve excellence in their trading, risk taking and risk management behaviors.
Doug currently coaches portfolio managers at elite hedge funds and has worked with traders at many of the world's largest banks. Some of his most popular speaking topics include: Trader Personality Profiling; Focusing on the Trade and Not the Money; Overcoming the Fear of Missing Out; and Identifying Your Trading Process and Edge.
Doug is internationally recognized as an industry thought leader, and regularly appears on television and in print. Doug's first book, The Trading Athlete (John Wiley & Sons, 2001), focused on how to use strategies from sport psychology to improve trading performance. His second book, 8 Ways to Great: Peak Performance on the Job and in Your Life, was published in 2010 by Penguin/G. P. Putnam’s Sons, and was released in paperback and as an audio book in January 2011. His third book, The Trading Psychology Playbook, will be released in 2013.
A former athlete and floor trader, Doug’s path to trading psychology was not a direct one. As the catcher and captain of his Division I college baseball team, Doug intended to pursue a coaching career in professional sports. After a detour spent on the trading floors in Chicago, Doug went back to school to earn the advanced degrees necessary to become a baseball coach.
It was in a masters degree program in sport psychology that Doug experienced his ‘aha!’ moment: If the psychological principles he was learning could be applied to athletes, why not try them out on traders– a similarly competitive breed? The idea worked. 12 years later, Doug is an in-‐demand public speaker and globally recognized trading psychology coach.
Doug received his B.A. from Colgate University in 1994, and went on to earn an M.S. in Exercise Science in 2000 from Southern Connecticut State University. In 2005, he received his Ph.D. in Psychology (with an emphasis in sport psychology) from Capella University. He is the chief executive officer of Edge Consulting LLC, a firm specializing in coaching portfolio managers at elite hedge funds.
Doug Hirschhorn is a regular contributor to CNBC, appearing on many of the financial network's regularly scheduled shows. Doug has also appeared on Bloomberg, MSNBC, CNN, CNBC, The Today Show, VH1 and more.
